Bored At Work Diaries – 20 December 2016

20 December 2016

Oh look, work has dried up once again. Work ahead they said. We’re so far behind they said. You all need to work harder the next couple of weeks.

I click “refresh” in my program, nothing shows up.

I walk by the posted “how are we doing?” graphs, we’re ahead of this year’s goal.

At least this year management didn’t try to pull the “optional extended workdays” bullshit like last year. I declined to do both, since I would’ve sat around for two hours twiddling my thumbs.

It might seem that I’m complaining a lot about how the day seems to crawl, I was actually surprised today that the time passed. Except for that meeting this morning (that ran over time, typical). I’m holding off on doing a piece of work until tomorrow, because I have to parcel out and time-manage like that to keep sane.

Yesterday, I found out that the back coil springs (both of them) on my TDI rusted out near the bottom and broke. Apparently this is a typical and normal thing for my car model. One more repair that gets added to my car’s 90,000 mile service on New Year’s Eve. The car is running great and since I take very good care of it, it looks almost brand new. It pays to take care of the things you own, especially expensive ones.

Even with having a massage this past Friday, I’m still slightly sore. It must be a combination of the weather and me beating the shit out of my body with lifting/running. Maybe if I’m lucky, the girl I go to in Buffalo will be available for a massage. This girl is the standard that I base all masseuses on, so I hope she has a cancellation when I’m in town next week.

Talked to Redhead last Thursday, and I’ll probably see her again tonight in my complex’s fitness center. I’m still talking with her, and she with me, so I guess things are still going alright. It would be nice if her schedule cleared up though (an actual full schedule, not the fake full BS) so I could actually take her out for a drink. Be patient, but don’t lose sleep over it. She’s telling you stuff about her life, letting you in slightly bit-by-bit, another good sign. To be honest, if she had a boyfriend, was seeing someone, or wasn’t interested she would’ve told you so already. Don’t worry. Just be a normal human being and enjoy being in the moment with conversation.

Bored At Work Diaries – 13 December 2016

13 December 2016

It started to snow earlier today, and many of my coworkers are freaking out about the drive home. I swear every year this nonsense happens every time the white stuff begins to fall. My commute home tonight is most likely going to be very slow (even if the roads I will be traveling on will be clear). Not looking forward to that drive at all.

The infrequency snowfall here in Columbus probably feeds into the “freak out” that happens. A dusting occurs overnight, and all the school districts in the county close up for the day due to “weather.” Total BS.

I remember growing up that if my school district actually closed up for snow, it was really bad out. I’m talking blizzard conditions or heavy accumulation (>2 ft). Even after moving away from WNY, I shake my head in disappointment when Columbus, still in the North, acts like they’re North Carolina or Georgia when snow falls. It also doesn’t help the city when most locales, like the City of Columbus proper, don’t plow or salt the roads. I fear ice more so here than when I’m back in Buffalo!

And they get worse weather!

Anyways, due to some BS survey management made us take, we now have to have 30 minute 1-on-1 meetings with our direct manager once a month. Supposedly I was going to talk to mine at 13:30, but he ran over time with the previous person by 20-25 minutes. Unprofessional to say the least. To be honest I was fuming, and I knew these meetings were going to be a waste of my time, but to go over like that? Bad management of both time and the person you’re talking to. I mentioned some bugs I’ve been encountering and was told about when our self-assessments were due. Grand total: 15 minutes.

Overall, a waste of my time.

I came back to my office, finished up what I was doing, and began typing this. Honestly, it does help to pass the time (it’s now 15:30) until I can head home.

Now if I was a less productive person, I’d be working “bell to bell” since I’d most likely be behind on everything. Since I am very productive and know exactly what I have to do to meet my objectives, I can “coast” for the most part. Furthermore, busting my butt won’t get me promoted faster, so why kill myself?

Bored At Work Diaries – 8 December 2016

8 December 2016

Back at it again, it seems.

For some reason all the work that’s pertinent to my group dried up by Tuesday, and that’s making me scrounge by doing stuff from another work-group to keep occupied. Very tedious and annoying.

Due to this lack, I’ve been taking my time with all the stuff I do, dragging it out as long as possible. Why bother flying through some easy-to-do stuff when there’s nothing else to do after it? The lack of direction from my manager in a “focus on this after [things] are done” way is telling of the dysfunction of the company. I’m still waiting for the hammer to drop, even with upper management’s “sunshine, lollipops, unicorns, and rainbows” view of the future.

Ideally, I should be writing this directly on my blog but I’m not dumb enough to log into it here at work. While I do have the app on my phone, I find it easier to compose when using a real keyboard and not hunched over a small screen. That and making an edit on a regular computer is much easier.

I’ve been really drained as of late. While I’ve been dreaming when I’ve slept (a good sign), waking up in the morning has me feeling like I should not bother to get out of bed. The past few days I even debated on calling in sick to work, but I manned up and started my day. I’ll bet this lethargy is coupled with my “dealing with work tedium” I’ve mentioned above.

Tomorrow, I’ll be taking the afternoon off. This should give me some more time to get ahead on my recordings for Christmas week or just to veg out with a videogame for the afternoon (I’m revisiting FF13 to possibly “Platinum” the game). Either way, the weekend will be a little bit longer, and hopefully I can recharge my batteries a bit more before returning to the salt mines on Monday.

Big Difference

Compare and contrast

John Adams, late 18th century: When writing about politics and the “best” form of government, he referenced Classical literature and the thoughts of many intelligent philosophers.

Intellectual,” early 21th century: Is not able to “refute” arguments and opposing positions (or any position really) without referencing “Star Wars,” “Game of Thrones,” “Harry Potter,” “Lord of the Rings,” or “House of Cards.”

Bored At Work Diaries – Thanksgiving Week

21 November 2016

For the moment, I’m trying to kill some time before I can leave and go home. While my day went by surprisingly fast, the last hour or so always seems to drag out to infinity. Fiddling about trying to look busy is always a chore, and it’s grating to do day-in and day-out. I shouldn’t complain since my job is relatively easy and straightforward, even if it is repetitive and monotonous.

Speaking of doing nothing, I pretty much did nothing at all over the entire weekend. I just vegged out watching speedruns of FFXIII, Shining Force, and Shining Force II. Coupled with the sudden drop in temperatures over the weekend, it probably was better that I didn’t feel the desire to “head out” and do something. I even ordered a pizza on Saturday and had it delivered, even though I usually go pick it up. Pure laziness on my part. I need a break it seems.

Due to the short workweek, it’s like a ghost town. I haven’t looked, but I’m guessing that the parking lot is less than half full. If I had the extra time, I probably would’ve taken the entire week off. However, that would be a little out of character for me. I usually try to save a few vacation days for “just in case” times. As it stands, I have 2 days left for the rest of the year, which budgets the Monday after Thanksgiving and the 3 days after Christmas.

It’s not like I’m going anywhere special, just my parent’s house in Buffalo. While I might call it “home” it doesn’t feel like “home” since after I moved out in 2006. Having said that, going there allows me to “recharge” a bit, when there isn’t some “run everywhere, see everyone” thing going on. That part is draining. Of course the 5 hour drive is a little daunting too.

Looks like there won’t be any snowstorms hitting my route up to WNY this Thursday, so that’s good. As a precaution I’ll still throw my sleeping bag in my trunk.

On a different note: I hit 100 subscribers over on YouTube, so that’s cool.

22 November 2016

I feel like absolute trash today. Groggy, slow, and a lack of focus. I’m wishing that today will go by quicker so I can go home and crash. I’ll probably even skip today’s run too. It would be much simpler if I just got actually sick instead of this “almost, not quite” nonsense.

It seems that the weather report to the north of Columbus is good for Thanksgiving Day, so I shall be driving up for the weekend. I think there’s only going to be some rain forecast, which I’ll have to deal with while driving through.

Speaking of cars, this morning it was around 28°F and I had to scrape a decent amount of frost off of all my windows. I miss having a garage. Hopefully there won’t be any ice storms this coming winter, since I don’t want a repeat of 2009 when I had to break a layer of ice (from sleet) off my car door to open it. That day was a bitch to drive, if I remember correctly. Goddamn Columbus and their non-existent budget and laughable toy trucks for snow removal!

This right here is me eating up time again. I even had tea a short while ago to give me both a caffeine perk up and some warmth. Now I need to go over to the canteen and rinse out my mug. I’ll get to it in a little bit.

At least these little “diaries” aren’t a part of the 1000 words challenge I was doing. Between when I was doing the challenge in August and now, I’ve done even less.

Things seem to be slowing to a crawl, yet the days go by quickly. Like I mentioned yesterday, my weekend flew by, even with doing practically nothing. I think I’m looking forward to the “break” this coming weekend.

I’m still tired though.

Get On Gab

With the recent Twitter bans of Pax Dickinson and Ricky Vaughn, it is extremely important that you “get in line” for Gab.

Gab is the free speech platform that Twitter falsely claims to be. It even has things that Twitter lacks, like editing posts and an increased number of characters (>140).

Head on over to and “get in line” ASAP!

(It’ll take a week or two for the “invite” to show up in your email, so be patient)

Don’t let yourself be silenced by the Thought Police over on Twitter!

1000 Words Challenge Recap – 26 August 2016

26 August 2016

14:44. Surprisingly, today went by quickly. I actually had work to do for most of the day, and actually got through a lot. That made what I expected to be a normal, slowly dragging Friday into one where I looked up in surprise at the time that passed. Too bad all the days aren’t like this.

It was pretty damn hot out again, with the humidity being up there too. It was so hot that I took my after-lunch walk inside the building on the long path between the buildings. I did about 4 laps and then headed back up to my desk for the afternoon. I’m glad I didn’t walk outside today, since I probably would’ve had to “cool off” for a long time due to the heat.

It looks like this weekend is going to be more of the same, weather-wise. Hot and sunny, good pool weather depending on the strength of the sun. It’s no use to go down to the pool, roast in the sun, and be uncomfortable. I already have a decent tan that I worked on in late May and early June, so it’s not like I need to be any darker than I already am. And believe me, there is a startling difference in tone between my arms and what my swimsuit covers! The tan should start to fade once the weather starts getting colder, but I’ll permanently have that glaring tone shift below my waist and mid-thigh up. Ah, the wonders of having Mediterranean skin!

I do have a massage later this evening, so I’m debating on whether to go for a swim or not after work. I’m leaning towards going because it’ll give me a chance to cool off for the evening and maybe get some reading done in the process. Normally, Friday evening is a gym/workout day, but since I don’t want to go into the massage with more soreness than I already have, I skip it. Which is fine anyways, my body can use a rest for another day.

What was strange was that I scheduled out three weeks for my next massage instead of two. I must’ve not been paying attention when the girl made my next appointment, she misheard me and thought I said “two weeks,” or the guy I see wasn’t available that day. To be honest, I don’t remember at all. I come out of a massage half-asleep and partially sore anyways, so I’m kind of out of it when I schedule my next appointment. I think I usually say less than twenty words when scheduling, mostly monosyllables.

Tonight’s massage is going to be a bitch to get through, due to the three week gap and because I tweaked a muscle two weeks ago while doing concentration curls. Ideally, a massage is all relaxation and gently getting rid of tension and knots in your muscles. In reality, and because I get deep tissue massages, it’s an ordeal to get through. An ordeal that you know will be better for you after you complete it, so you endure the pain of having the knotted muscles worked out. Every time I get home from one of these, I take a shower and go right to bed. A few days later, things feel great again, so it’s worth the discomfort and the money.

Recording for my YouTube channel this weekend doesn’t seem that bad. Since I’ll be gone next weekend, I have to record ahead for the week of 5-9 September. The only thing left to do is the six episodes of the Factorio “Build The Wall!” series, so roughly two hours of my time to record. While the episodes themselves only take about 20 or so minutes apiece to record, the upload time to YouTube measures into the 1 hour plus territory. Due to the large amount of “stuff” on the screen at the time, a simple 20 minute episode can be greater than 1 GB in size. Uploading said file, when the best upload speed my current internet gets is 2.0 Mbps, takes anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours to do. Now multiply that number by 3, you can look at a maximum upload time of 4-6 hours. I probably should look into getting an upgrade to my internet speed, but this really only occurs when I record Factorio. EUIV, HOI4, CK2, Victoria 2, Plague Inc; all of these I don’t have to worry about. I usually upload episodes in the background right when I finish recording them, so as I finish the next episode the previous one is processing. This system has suited me well so far.

19:23. I went for a swim after work. The water was refreshing and the sun strong but not unbearable. I did a few lengths underwater for a slight cardio workout and then floated for a bit. Since there wasn’t anything to look at up in the sky, I rolled over and went to the steps by the zero entry to sit and think.

I pondered about my life and how Fortune’s wheel could’ve spun differently. Wondering about all the times where her wheel spun against me. Bad luck. Mala fortuna. Malocchio. St. Michael protect me!

I feel stuck, and while outwardly mobile, trapped. Hemmed in with a job that offers little to no chance for growth or advancement. Hobbled by the lack of jobs in my field, or ones I could possibly get if I had the experience required. Ph.D. required! A glutted market of job-seekers competing for positions that 20 years ago would say “B.S. in Chemistry required”! It doesn’t help that even the scores of jobs I see that are “entry-level”, I get a flat rejection letter from those. Or, as what happened at a company’s job fair I went to a year ago, they told me specifically, “you’re overqualified for this position.” No shit! I can’t get my foot in the door to gain experience when every job I’ve see requires you to have experience in the first place!

That massage is starting to look really good right about now.
